"It’s a Three-Second Kiss": Abhirami Addresses Viral Scene With Kamal Haasan in Thug Life

As the release of Thug Life, one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year, draws closer, buzz around its trailer has intensified. While many fans praised the action-packed preview, a particular scene featuring a kiss between Kamal Haasan and actress Abhirami stirred controversy online — largely due to the noticeable age difference between the two actors.
Now, Abhirami has spoken out, breaking her silence in an interview with Hindustan Times.
Abhirami Responds to the Controversy
Addressing the viral moment, Abhirami emphasized that the scene has been blown out of proportion. “The kissing scene is a three-second kiss! The fact that only that was shown in the trailer is a little misleading,” she said. “When you watch the movie, the scene and what leads up to the kiss — you won’t even flinch. It fits so well into the narrative.”
She noted that while such promotional highlights are common, the focus on this brief moment might be unnecessary. “I understand why it’s being talked about, but people should wait to watch the full film before forming opinions.”
Abhirami also shared her views on public scrutiny and creative choices. “It’s not my place to question Mani Ratnam sir’s vision or his casting decisions. Controversies are bound to happen, especially today — it’s hard to escape criticism.”
Why the Scene Sparked Strong Reactions
Reflecting on the heightened response, Abhirami admitted she wasn’t entirely sure why the scene went viral but suggested Kamal Haasan’s cinematic legacy may play a role.
“Kamal sir has always been a fearless storyteller. He’s never shied away from bold or intimate subjects,” she said, recalling his nuanced portrayal of intimacy in films like Hey Ram. “When an actor of his stature takes on such moments, it naturally draws attention.”
She also pointed out that onscreen intimacy is far more common today than it once was. “It’s not unusual for actors to do kissing scenes anymore. I believe the audience will grow more accepting of these portrayals over time.”
